Forged or PMR's

1999 7.3 PSD not quite sure of the build date this should be on the valve covers, correct? After 00' is when the switch was made from forged to pmr's? Should I still check? Thanks in advance.

It's up to you but I'm pretty sure you have forged units. A real enthusiast would look just for the satisfaction of knowing and simply fooling with it.

Thanks. Sounds like fun.

Just to make sure, I remove the service plug on the driver's side of the engine block near oil filler. Once the plug is removed what exactly am I looking for?

Once you remove the 5/32" plug near the pan rail, you bump the starter (with the ignition) until you can see something in the hole with a mirror. Once you get the connecting rod to the point you need, you will either see a nut and stud, or a bolt head and thats it. You want to see a nut and stud.

If you don't want to bump the starter to get the crankshaft to just the right position, use a 24mm socket on a breaker bar off of the crankshaft pulley. I think the connecting rod nuts are 12 point, so that will help while you are looking through that little hole.

Oh, and PMR's didn't come out until sometime in 2000, so you most likely will have forged rods.

There's no point in checking. All the 99 and 00 models are forged. The switch was in late 2000, but not until the 01 production run had started.

Spoil Sport. Of course he has forged ones. I'm not happy wearing the crown of the earliest known PMR engine here. That is unless someone else has come along when I was not lookin.

Yeah, thanks. Take the crown from me. What was the build date on that engine and where was it built?
