According to "The American V-8 Engine Data Handbook 1949-1974" (p138), the 1972 HO engine was "R" code. It does not show a "M" code for 1972. If it is wrong and there is a "M" code, it is likely a 351C 4V (not CJ, Boss, or HO)...

I believe the following are the M codes for Ranchero
M
351 V-8 290 hp (1969-70)
351 V-8 285 hp (1971-74)
