The lower the gear ratio the smaller the pinion gear is... the pinion in the 4.88 gear set may not have met Ford's durability standards.

The lower the gear ratio the smaller the pinion gear is... the pinion in the 4.88 gear set may not have met Ford's durability standards, so they reduced the hp and torque. For highway driving I see no reason for 4.88 gears in a diesel.

Well According to the order guide it does state that the:
HIGH CAPACITY TRAILER TOW PACKAGE (535)
Availability:
• Optional on all F-450 Pickups
Includes:
• 4.88 Limited Slip rear axle (X8L)
• Increases GCWR from 26,000 lbs. to 33,000 lbs.
• Upgraded rear axle
Can't find the "upgraded rear axle" anywhere in the specs... hummm
