Question air pump?

I was looking under the hood today and i came across the diagram next to the radiator, and it has a picture of all the pullies and the surp. belt. I noticed it has a air pump on the diagram, i had never heard of a air pump under the hood before. what is it for?

The air pump is part of the emission control system. Looks like a mini air conditioner compressor.

Its actually an A.I.R. pump or air injection reactor it pumps air into the cat and into the heads to help burn unburnt gas or hydrocarbons

I had two smog pumps fail within 18 months on my '95 F-150 with a 351Windsor. A short time back, the 3rd pump started making a terrible racket. I simply purchased a 94.5" serpentine belt to replace the original 102" belt & bypassed the A.I.R. pump completely.

Worked great & eliminated that terrible noise. Runs so quiet now, the neighbors no longer peek out the bedroom curtains at me when I leave for work in the mornings.

My truck is an 88 and it is still running with the original. It is required if you want to pass emissions.
