Ran accross this website that explains the innards of the 6.0 powerstroke and the 5 speed torqshift auto which it says is really a six speed. Check it out, is this correct? The first part of the page talks about the 6.0 but latter down it gets into the tranny. 6.0 PowerStroke Page

Kinda weird. Does not explain their theory very well. Wonder if this is just on the PSD auto transmission version only. Since there were 2 versions of the transmission depending on if you buy the gas or diesel engine. Are both versions the model 5R110W?

Yes. I can't find any info anywhere, thats why I decided to post what I found hoping someone smarter than me had the answer. Wish I had a shop manual on this tranny. It is a very fine transmission with less problems than the allison GM uses both of which are far far better than the dodge auto they use with the cummins.

In a sorta kinda way yes, it looks to me like 3 or 4 actual gears, with overdrive creating others. 2nd gear is actually 1st with overdrive on, 4th is 3rd with over drive, and If the pattern follow than 6th is 5th overdrive. That's what I am seeing based on that text, and I do not guarantee it's validity. (just a small disclaimer for anyone who is law suit happy)
The 5R110W, or TorqShift, automatic transmission is a redesign of the E40D/4R100. Basically, the gear ratio for first gear was lowered from 2.71 : 1 to 3.09 : 1. To get second gear the overdrive clutch is engaged to give a ratio of 2.2 : 1. Third gear is now the same ratio as the old second gear, 1.54 : 1. The TorqShift is advertised as being a 5 speed automatic, when actually it has six forward speeds. On cold engine operation (below 0 degrees) the overdrive clutch is engaged in third gear for a ratio of 1.09 : 1. The transmission will shift directly to sixth from fourth and fifth is skipped. On a warm engine the shift pattern would be 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 5th (direct drive), 6th.
The torqshift has 3 gears, and an overdrive that can be used on any of the three gears esentially making it a six speed. However, it only uses 5 at any given time depending on temperature.
It either shifts 1,2,3,4,6 or 1,2,3,5,6.
With the TorqShift when it shifts between gears under heavy load does it unlock the converter for a short time and them lock it back up like the 4R100 does.
Although it doesn't stay there long, I do believe the torque converter lock-up does unlock when encountering increasing load, such as when starting to climb a hill. It seems that I have noticed rpm increase of possibly 150 rpm for several seconds, but as load increases, it goes for the next lower gear. That may be part of the normal shift pattern, I don't know.
I do know that when you decelerate the tc unlocks after a few seconds. Then if you go back after it, it re-locks and the rpm's drop again. Probably not a good idea to be one of those on-off-on-off type drivers. That sure isn't good for economy anyhow, and probably not for the tc "locker" as well.
The only time you would notice it is when you are pulling a heavy load, when I'm pulling my 5ver it will do it going into 2nd, 3rd and sometimes OD. unloaded you would never fell it do it.
Had it explained to me today. It is actually a three speed transmission with an overdrive gear that can be used in any gear making it a six speed tranny. That would explain the change in rpm as it goes in and out of overdrive in any given gear and I think that means it can stay locked up when the OD shifts. Is the part about the OD right?
