1978 302 with C6. Sometimes when approaching a stop it will down shift pretty hard. Was going to change the fluid and filter. This is a new truck for me. Otherwise it shifts fine.
Do you have a spring on the carb end of the "dinosaur arm" that connects down to the transmission? If you don't then most likely what is happening is that by the weight of the arm the tranny "thinks" you are actuating the arm therefore it will downshift.
have you checked the fluid level. i didnt have enough in my c6 when i installed it and filled it and when i would let off the gas it would down shift like a manual. i was low on atf
another thing i dont know if you know about this but i just found out this past weekend. 80 and back used atf in the tranny 80 81 and up uses dextron 3
