Hi All! I'm doing research on these codes and see that they're a lot more common than I thought. I see a lot of folks talking about cleaning a MAF and it may take care of the problem. I'm pretty mechanically illiterate...what's a MAF and how do I clean it? I also see researching vaccuum hoses...once I figure out how to get the hood to stay up (it wont 'lock' itself in the up position), I'll pretend I know what I'm looking for with the hoses. Another fix I saw was changing some type of gasket. Is this something I can take to the shop and have replaced relatively cheap? Thanks!
i had the same codes on my 2000 explorer it turned out it was the bosch spark plugs i put in i have researched the running lean problem and it can be any of a hundred problems from a vacum leak to a bad gas cap
Hey guys/gals! Thanks for the replies. The CEL light came on again this week and I ran the codes. Same ones....P0171 and P0174. To recap, I removed, cleaned and replaced the MAF. Drove for a week or two with no CEL. Now, it is back on.
Could this be the PCV? I bought a new one, but it looks like a royal pain to change it on my '99 4.0L OHV engine. Might it be the 2 oxygen sensors before the catalytic converter? Someone mentioned a vacuum leak. I have no clue about vacuum lines, how to trace them, where to start, etc. If someone could give me very novice detailed instructions, I would appreciate it. Thanks!
