6 speed auto trans etc

My wife and I just ordered a 2007 EX EL. I have questions. I noted that the 6 speed auto does not have dip stick. The service dept did not offer much on how to change and refil the trans. How is that done? Is there just a service hole where you pump the fulid in like a rear end? I did buy the tow package so the unit will be rated to tow in the 9,000 lb range. The tow package was a 350 dollar option that I really wanted so I can tow my boat or 72 scout on a tandam axle trailer. In any event does the tow package have a different gear ratio-3:73? We drove one with an air leveling system that I guess is intended to level the load when towing. I did not buy the option. I figured a weight dist hitch would be cheaper. In any event will there be any ride characteristic changes between the air system and the standard issue suspension? Thanks.

The trans still has a fill tube, just a cap instead of a dipstick. They now call the dip stick a 'Measuring tool'. Mercedes and BMW had done this back 1999 on many series. Both my 99' E430 and 03' E500 do not have oil or trans dipsticks. Not to worry. There are sensors galore and you will now have an additional cooler for the transmission with the Heavy Duty Tow package.
The rear gear is the same for all Heavy Duty Tow package Expedtions EL or Non-EL and 4X2 or 4X4. The only difference is the rating which is 200lbs more the 4X2 versions.
As for the air leveling suspension, Ford opted for a different design, and are not using the air bags anymore. Instead they have an air filled shock at the rear that has a pump and sensors galore. Again very similar to German and Swedish designs from Bosch. Hopefully these will be much better than the old style air bags were of the previous models. The air suspension is a rear only option and not four corner like previous models of the Expedition.

I had deleted the air suspension four corner load leveling on the 99' Expedition when I had it built. When I had the 2007 built after seeing the new design, I opted for it. I'm glad I did. This system levels a hitch everytime so far when towing a boat or utility trailer. Much nicer than having to jack the rear up with manual shocks and then bleed off what you do not need.

Hope this helped you,

Randy B

you really pump the fuild back up into the trans from a specail plug in the bottom of the trans and it comes back out at a set level and at operating temps.

but if you want a dip stick we have a deep alloy pan that adds a few more qts and has a dip stick fill tube into the pan with the kit. the stick winds up right where we all are used to have them.
