The other thing to note about these axles, is that the brake backing plates can be used on Model A through 40's front axles to upgrade their brakes. Guys on the H.A.M.B. have them for sale all the time, and seem to ask a pretty penny for them.

irondragon, that looks like the same rear in my 53 250. was it 4.88? From what I've been told 67-70 250 rears with 8 bolt switches easiest.

You can actually go with up to a 1972 F-250 axle (1973 was the big change in the truck bodies). They used a Dana 60 under the F-250's, which is a direct bolt in minus some modification to driveshaft length.

The axle I have has 3.54 gears and a Power-Loc, locking (actual locker, not limited slip) differential.. hopefully traction won't be an issue I'm hoping that this fairly mild gear ratio will help me get up to highway speeds.

thanks, nice to actually ask someone with heavier truck, 95% trucks on here are 1/2 tons. I'm hoping with 4 speed, that the lower the ratio, the better, and that I'll still have enough umphhh.

I've been trying to get ahold of Irondragon or anyone else that has changed out the rear axle on an f3. I have a '52 with the Timken on it. I have gotten in touch with a guy who has a few rear axles from a '72 f-250. I keep hearing it's a direct bolt-in. Is there anything that needs to be done for the driveshaft or will it just bolt in also? Any help and advice would be greatly appriciated.

I haven't gotten to the point of hooking up a driveshaft, and with my particular truck, I have to use a modified driveshaft anyways since I have lengthened the wheelbase of my F-3. However to the best of my understanding, the stock driveshaft should bolt up. I know the axle itself bolts right in to the springs. Check my gallery for pictures of that.

The best thing that I have done so for for my 53 F-25 was to swap a 3.73 dana 60 in and get rid of the 4.86 timken. It made it a lot more fun to drive and will actually get down the road 60 - 65 mph and not sound like the little flathead wants to come apart.

The install is truly a bolt in, just drop out the timken and bolt in the dana 60. It took longer to redo the brakes than to install it under the truck. No change to the drive shaft length no change of the u-joints just bolt it up.

Have a great day.....

if you flip it so the pinion is pointing up and weld a hitch to it you can put a spreading plate on the pinion then fab up a hopper over top of it and you will have a nice ground driven spreader for lime on your fields or sand on the driveway in the winter.
