I bought a truck, was told it had a 302 in it.Posted in another section asking for ID help and was told 6 bolts on the valve covers means a 302,it has 6 bolt covers.I see no tag on it anywhere and it's not the original engine, are the #'s stamped on the block somewhere? Are all the 302 internal components interchangeable, such as cam, intake manifold, starter? (I need a starter right now, don't know what year to ask for)
I'd like to figger out what year this engine is before I try to go buy parts for it,any help appreciated.
Block casting #'s are near the oil pan gasket surface up behind the starter. There should also be a capital letter cast into the front corner of one of the heads near the valve cover gasket surface. That should ID what you have. To differentiate a 302 from a 351, look at the base of the distributor where it meets the block. If this surface is about level with the gasket surface of the lower intake, it's a 302, if it's below the gasket surface about an inch and a half, it's a 351.
Any 302 starter will fit, but cams and EFI intakes were different between the cars and trucks. If you're talking carb'd intakes say so...
If you're getting a starter at your local parts store be sure to take your old one with you to compare. This may sound like a no-brainer but you'd be surprised how many of us have had to make an extra trip back to the store. Also I sure like the looks of the newer mini high torque starters. Good luck!
There is a metal tag on the bolt holding the coil bracket to the engine, the numbers are faded but I'm pretty sure this is it:
302 C 69 5
There is a tag on the dist.,the number is:
89
D9AE
12127
AAA
8K-27
There was a broken-off metal tag on top of the intake manifold positioned in such a manner that it could have come off of an intake manifold bolt, but was also right beneath the carb. That number is:
D3TF BE
A 3F 6
The intake manifold casting number is:
C8AE - 9425 - B
A picture of the intake manifold at the t-stat housing and of the exhaust manifold,if that helps.
Also, what kind of automatic transmissions would come standard with this engine? The bellhouse is aluminum if that means anything.
Thanks in advance for any help.

Just an FYI-
Ford used (and still do) a alpha numeric system for labeling.
I am far from an expert on this, but when you see a part number that start C8, that means it was devloped in 1968. All 60's part numbers are C, 70's are D, etc. The number is the year in the decade. This doesn't necessarily mean that's when the part was made, like your intake, but when it was first put into production. So, your intake was developed in 1968, Distributor 1979, carb spacer 1973, etc.
I usually try to find the latest part number and that can give you an idea of the age of the unit. But, like was said, you have a hodgepodge of parts right now.
Like Hemieater said, the number by the starter is the main one you need.
I'm sure someone could expand on this.
Looks like you've got a 69 302 with a later Duraspark distributor in it (damn sure better than points it came with) Was the other metal tag aluminum? And was it "house" shaped with a hole in the crown of the roof? If so, that came off the carb. Cheances are some one swapped a 73 carb onto the intake sometime in the past.
Thanks for the help,I pulled the starter just now and found some # behind it like you said.I had to use some grease cutter and found some numbers, the larger of the script said:
C8OE - 6015A
It may have been a 'B' instead of an '8' but that's what it looked more like.
There appeared to be some very small numbers next to the bigger number and if that's the one I need it will take a bit more degreasing to get it.
Thanks for the help.I'm not against mutt engines as long as the block and heads are keepers I'm going to tear it down and go through it.
Thanks

C8OE-6015-A is correct for a 68-up 302 block, The date code next to it will tell you exactly when the block was cast. This is the number/letter/number(s) combination next to the casting numbers. First number is the year it was cast, if it's a zero thru 7, then it was cast after 1969. The letter is the month code, this starts with "A" for January thru "M" for December, they skipped the letter "I". The last number or numbers is the day of the month it was cast.
Could also have an FMX transmission in there as well. Aluminum bellhousing, cast iron main case, aluminum tailhousing.
It does have an aluminum tailpiece on it and cast-iron main case.Does that mean it couldn't be anything but an FMX? I did a brief search and didn't find out much about the FMX and couldn't get far enough under the tranny to get a good square look at the pan,it's not L-shaped tho-
Thanks to all for the id help and tips I like to know what I got so I can research it.
While parts aren't as plentiful, the FMX falls somewhere between the C-6 and C-4 in durability. Drain the oil out and it'll still go. Back in the 70's everyone wanted a 351C backed by the FMX. The AOD was based on it. The pan is more rectangular than the C-4's. The FMX is a good tough transmission. They were made up into the early 80's.
