I ordered a Bassani y pipe for my 89 302 and I can't wait to get it. In the meantime I was wondering what kind of wrench is the best to use to get the old y pipe off from the stock manifolds. The bolts are rusty and I already started spraying them with penetrating oil, but the passenger side looks next to impossible to reach. Any ideas?
Was not bad getting the old one off of my 95. I did need to use a wabble, and some extentions on the pas side rear bolt. I used a impact. I snapped the studs, but then agean I was not reusing the manafolds.
I just did a header swap and wound up cutting a couple studs, if you are reusing the manifolds I am afraid you won't be too happy when you are done. I picked up a set of headman shorties on e-bay for $110...you might want to consider doing a header swap too. The manifolds are junk and tend to crack anyway. It is worth the peace of mind. I know you just dumped 250+ on the y-pipe, but there just isn't any for sure way.
I've got an 87 and I coated the bolts with PB Blaster and they actually came right off after they broke loose. I started spraying all the bolts 3 days before I did the exhaust work.
Thanks for the input guys. Moe, I was thinking of getting the hedman shorties as well but haven't been able to find them for that price. Would it be easier to do headers and y pipe all at once so if need be I could cut the old manifold studs?
Well, its really easier to just break the manifold studs loose by trying to uncrew them.
If they break then whatever.
I found it more of a peace of mind when I went with the bassani headers and y-pipe.
I'll try to get the nuts off with an impact wrench, and if I break a stud then I'll order the bassani headers. If not, I will wait and see how the y pipe runs with the stock manifolds.
I have the Ford ss headers and the Borla cat back , was real happy but had to have the Basani y pipe, once installed wish I had put the money somewhere else. No improvement, not impressed.
im considering swapping the factory headers and dual exhaust from my 93 Lightning to my bronco, cuz im goin with long tubes, and true duals on the L. i hope there will be some improvement.....
