I remember hearing about some belts that caused problems, but not sure on the brand. Goodyear does ring a bell though. I just installed a Gates belt, and have had no problems with it, if you're looking for an alternative to the Ford belt. I don't know how price compares though.
My truck does that as well, if you look at the belts it bounces. When I had my truck in for the trans, the guy told me to run a ford belt and it would go away.
i put on a Gates at replacement time .. squealed like crazy .. sounded horrible .. replaced with motocraft and no problems since .. motocraft only for me !
Two things: Make certain that all of the pulleys are clean and that you have clean hands when installing the new belt - Ford/Goodyear/Dayco. It takes very little oil/grease on the belt to cause a ruckus. Also check your tensioner to ensure that all is within specifications. Weak spring will cause the serpentine belt to "bounce" and usually will make some noise.
how long does the belt(serpentine) last on our trucks?
I have about 107K and I think the belt may need to be replaced. It is not frayed, but has started making more noise.
how much does a Motorcraft belt cost?
I have a 114k on the factory belt in my 99 and it still looks real good, however, I am getting a little nervous. When I do the replacement I'll go with MotorCraft and change the upper hose to the one that allows easier belt changes on the next go around.
The place to look is at the tensioner - If the hash mark on the moving side of the tensioner doesn't fall btw the two marks on the stationary side - the belt's either too long or, too short.
Also, I can't remember where I saw this (TSB??) but, Superduty's can have two slightly different belt lengths. (the dual alt - opt is the 3rd belt size) If I remember correctly - Ford issed a bulletin to solve a belt slip condition when the fan clutch locks up under load. I think this only applied to certain years and, involved changing one of the pulleys or, idlers as well.
befor my trip to florida i replaced my belt with a napa brand micro-v belt part # 25-081223 5000 miles 0n it now.. no noise no chaffing..160k on old belt still in good shape..just wanted to be safe..its now in the spare parts box....
