Thumbs down tailgate vs net

Just wondering, I keep hearing that installing a tonneau cover will get me some fuel savings...

what about the net? same same?

just dropping the tailgate??

seems like a simple question, i know.

I saw show on tv, I think it was on the discover channel, that dropping your tail gate does not save on fuel, if fact it causes more drag. When the tail gate is closed an air bubble forms in the box and the wind passes smoothly over the truck bed. When the tail gate is open the air comes over the cab and pounds down on the bottom of the box. At the end of the show there was an interview with a rep from one of the big three car makers that confirmed this. I have had both a cap and now a tonneau cover and I am quite sure the tonneau cover saves on fuel. I did not notice any difference in mileage with the cap.

I saw the same bit on TV, it was Myth Busters. I think one important missing piece is bed length. Myth Busters did their test on a Screw 5 1/2' bed. I used to have a regular cab with an 8 ft box and it definetly got better mileage with the gate down. I think the key is to try it and see what you get.
