Tried to remove the cooling fan to install a fluid damper & could not get it off.
I know it has left handed threads.Had a 3 foot pipe on it & a pry bar in the pulley slot,it would not budge!! any susgestions?! Thanks!
Ohhh Ive had this problem several times, lots of bloody knuckles, I usually get it loose with a big wrench and good smack with a hammer, Ive even had to put a little heat on it before. Good luck!
First trick is that it is standard right hand thread, not left hand thread, unlike most cooling fan nuts.
You really need the specialized wrench to do it, but a 1 1/4 inch combination wrench and a 3/8 inch extension inserted into one of the water pump pulley holes will usually do the trick.
6.0s have always been right hand thread. In most cases, it's safe to assume it's right hand thread unless there is a warning on the fan shroud telling you it is left hand thread. I use an air hammer (carefully) to break the fan free from the waterpump and then just spin it off by hand.
There is a full post with a step by step for replacing the stock damper with a fluid damper & it makes a point of saying it is left handed. The ford cars I have done are left.
