I know that I have read that 53-72 beds are interchangeable. I have also read that some of the later beds have the fenders mounted higher.
I have also seen a bed on a 65 that looked similar on the out side, but had "fenderwells" that extended about 3/4" into the bed.
But what I wonder is, what is the difference between the 53-72 beds and the later beds? Will they absolutely not fit my 53? What is the difference in them?
I have located a nice bed, but the current owner is not sure what it came off of. It sure looks like my current bed, but he thinks it came off of a 79.
I can't help much. I know that just about any bed can be put on any truck if you have the patience and know how. I've even seen some Effies with Chevy beds on them. Many aftermarket generic beds are made for 48-72 and are designed much like the 51-52 with flat sides and come with no fender holes so you can place the fenders wherever you want them. Some of the aftermarket reproduction beds do have the holes for the fenders and the 48-50 bed is different from the 51-52 and 53-72. I got mine from ProsPick for my 48. I seem to remember a conversation here where it was mentioned that beds after 73 may have the fenders mounted higher but not sure.

Any advise would be appreciated!
The HALF TON beds remained essentially the same 1957-79..what the dif is between the 53-56 beds, I dunno, prolly little. Some of the F250 and 350 beds have inner side steps, other misc features.******^^^

The tailgate changed part numbers in 1973: D8TZ-8340700-A
Side steps remained the same 1957-79.

I seem to recall the 53-56's used a different rear fender (BAAA-16312/3-A), but I don't have a parts book yet (It's coming next week).

Some of the parts supplies list the tailgate from 53-72 on their repop ones. Thats the short bed one. I do not know much about the longer beds. They were taller and wider from the charts I have seen.

I have a friend who's been driving the same 54 F100 for 26 years...(6 with o/d) it's his DD. I went to Carpenter's several years ago, and bought him Carpenter's bed wood kit. The counterman said the wood fits all the 53-79 trucks.
The wood is locally cut oak...very nice...comes unfinished and was a perfect fit.
When you go to Carpenter's plan on staying awhile...take your wallet, too.
I don't have the 48-56 book yet, so I typed 1957 because from there till 1989, I have refs.

The difference between the 53-72 and the 73-79 bed sides is the top rail. The earlier ones are angled and the later bed side had a top rail that was flat, made mounting a tool box much easier.
Make sure you check the thread that Fomoko1 put on here. There can be up to a 2" difference on the fender height. My '53 came with higher fenders, not sure if it's the higher bed mounting holes or possibly that they are replacement fenders that the PO used that require a notch piece to go between the fender and the running board (i.e LMC truck catalog)
