97 explorer 4X4 lights flashing?

97 explorer 4X4 lights flashing?
I have a 97 Explorer All wheel drive that the 4 wheel high and 4 wheel low lights keep flashing off and on one the instrument cluster. When I drove the truck today I seemed to get it to go into 4 wheel high and low, however the lights on the instrument cluster didn't show a locked state. I pulled the truck into the garage and looked everything over and didn't notice anything out of the ordinary. Any ideas what could be going on and where to look to fix the problem. Thanks in advance.
