1974 Ford F-100 Steering Column issue...

I am having some issues with the steering on a 74' Ford F-100. It has a lot of play and I think I have found the issue. ( see pic ) I am going to replace the rubber on this Saturday. But.... the metal ring above the rubber does not look correct...???... Let me know what you think....

Let me know what you think it might be.

Thanks,

Craig

steering coupling

That's called a "steering coupling" (Ford basic part # 3A525). You can purchase the rubber by itself from a supplier. Ford and some suppliers here at FTE sell the complete assembly. That's what you may need.

Smile Rubber Coupler

I purchase the coupler last night and will change this weekend. I was concerned about the metal ring on top of the coupler. It looks bent to me.... I am not sure what is suppose to look like.

Please make your pics smaller before posting them.

The H.E.L.P. blister pack section of auto part at auto parts store has them but the ones at NAPA are supposed to be a better quality.

however,
If you know of some ..You can use a piece of conveyor belt.
Just use the old one as a template and cut it out.

Looks like the plastic insert has broken and come out of the column shaft housing on yours.

Here's what it should look like.

Thanks... I will make smaller next time. I just wanted everyone to see it. I bought the H.E.L.P kit last night from Auto Zone.

I will installed it tomorrow.

Thanks,

Craig

It's a REAL PITA to do.

But before you do it, get a new lower column bushing. You can install that while you have your column out.

Believe me, you need it...

That metal "ring" is part of the steering shaft and is supposed to be a bit wavy.
