Trans temp while towing

Towing in traffic trans temp was 180, outside air temp was 56 degrees.
This truck only has radiator for trans cooling - no oil to air cooler.
The truck is 1999 F350 DRW towing 10,500 trailer weight.
Is that temp OK for such a low outside temperature?

Think how high it will be at 90-100 degrees ambient. You need an aftermarket cooler, a Trucool should do nicely.

My trans temp with 7K at 105 ambients can get up to 190 but that is pushing it very hard in very hilly terrain. Get a cooler or a mag-tech tranny pan, or both.

Where is your sender located? if it is on the output side of the tranny those numbers are fine but if you are using the test port like most people they do seem a little high. Ditto on Rampage's trucool suggestion.

I find it odd that you don't have at least a small Oil to Air cooler, did it not come with a tow package? Anyway, I am very happy with my Tru Cool as well. Ordered it from the same site listed above.

With what you have, that's not bad if output fluid temp.
Get a oil to air cooler and you're good to go.

That truck has been modified. When it left the factory it only had an air to oil cooler, and no cooler in the radiator. It really needs both.

My Ex has a line running to the radiator and then to the trans cooler. I have since replaced it with a 6.0 cooler.

The stuff you should be able to get from Home Depot in the plumbing section. The hoses are got from a trans shop or parts house.

180 degrees isn't all that bad. It's when you get into the 220 degree area. Nevertheless, I am a firm believer in auxiliary coolers.

Better ones have T-stats to keep the trans fluid at a minimum operating temperature to help dissipate condensation.
