I THINK they're the same. I have a gennie from a 51 8N in the shop and the case is the same including position of the locating pinhole on the bottom, but the wiring contacts come thru the case in different locations (out the top, 90 deg off), and you'll need to swap front plates and pulleys. What I can't find is output info.
Update: Just talked to my dad who checked the tractor book and found the 8N generator is rated at 20A @ 6.8 Volts output. The pickup is rated at 30 - 33A @ 6.8V according to specs in my 48 Operator's Manual.
Might need to have a tractor gennie rewound if you go that way. Good luck. - tim
Rewind the genny...what the heck for?
Use any Ford genny that will fit and then use the matching regulator. Matching the regulator to the genny output amperage rating is important.
BTW, Ford gennys were available as options up to 60A according to my 48-55 Truck Parts Manual.
If you can find a part # I can possibly even do a cross reference to aftermarket replacements.
