Anybody know the stock width of the 53-56 rear axle flange to flange? I have a 57 passenger car rear end housing in my 56 Effie and it seems too narrow. Thanks -- Chuck
If it's from a 57-59 passenger car it is too narrow for 53-56. That was the narrowest nine inch Ford made. It's been awhile so I'm not sure but I think that measurement is about 49-50 inches flange to flange. I had one in a 34 Plymouth years ago and it was the perfect width...bolted in too.
Early Mustang guys would give top dollar for that rear end. IIRC, it is the correct width for the 65-66 mustangs. You could come out ahead on this one!
The Previous owner had intended to use offset wheels but the choices are limited and custom alloys are expensive. I have a 50 Ford Tudor sedan the will probably get the 57 rear end. I have 2 of the 57 rear ends, the one in the pickup is the large bearing version with 31 spline axles. I intend to use a 4 link with coil overs in the 56, it has a Volare front end under it now so it should ride nice when done.
At one time I had a link to a site that listed overall length of all the 9" rear ends but I can't locate it. I will be using a AOD behind a 351 and would like to find a rear end with traction lock and somewhere between a 3.55 - 3.89 ratio. Any Ideas where to look? -- Chuck
