WHAT ENGINE IN 56 F750 BIG JOB COE

Some of you may recall, Kenny will, that I located 56 F750 BIG JOB coe in a salvage yard. This particular yard is not open to the public and is owned by a friend of mine. The truck has been overtaken by vegatation over the last 15 years or so. There is also other vehicles jammed up next to it. I returned yesterday to try to get a look at the motor but still couldn't get near the truck. You would have to see it to understand. My question is what motor is most likely in the truck. It was a Coke-Cola delivery truck 1956 F750 Big Job cab over engine. I am hoping for a 292 with Rams Horn exhaust. Also there is a 59 F600 that has a y-block would it be a 292?

Thanks Charles

My book, shows the F750 came in two engines. 175 hp engine code prefix ECS which was a 302 with two barrel and 186 hp engine code prefix ECS which was a 302 with a four barrel. On F800's there was a 200 hp 332 engine with prefix code ECT. F750 is a conventional looking cab and C750 was the designation for a cab over engine stubby looking front end. Same engine in C750 and F750.

LAST EDITED ON 14-Sep-01 AT 04:20 PM (EST)[p]Hi Charles,
I do remember. As for the 1959, the F-600's were available with the 223 Six Cyl., 292 V-8, and 292 HD (heavy duty) V-8. Hope this helps.

Well the 59 sounds good but the 750 doesn't. Is there any chance of a 292 with rams horn exhaust beimg in the 56?

Y Block rams horns were in F-500 & 600. The larger series used an engine that was based on the Lincoln 317 and later Ford had dedicated engines for the large series. Those also used rams horns but they are not compatible with the 292 style.
One easy way to tell the difference is that on the 239 thru 312 the intake runners were staggered, the exhaust heat was set back a bit.
The Lincoln and true truck motors had the intake runners all in line. I can E-Mail you a picture of a 332 ECT type 4 bbl intake.

Charles,

When you get back to the truck you might want to check the VIN carefully as it's possible you may have misread some of the digits. The VIN should have the form shown below.

*tsseypnnnnn*

where the different fields are

t ss e y p nnnnn

From my 1956 Ford Shop Manual and other sources these letter fields translate to:

t - Truck Type
------------------
B = school bus
C = cab forward
F = standard
P = parcel delivery
T = ????

ss - Truck Series
------------------
10 = 100 series
25 = 250 series
35 = 350 series
50 = 500 series
60 = 600 series
70 = 700 series
75 = 750 series
80 = 800 series
90 = 900 series

e - Engine Code
---------------
D = 223 CID 6-cylinder
V = 272 CID 2 barrel 8-cylinder light duty
Z = 272 CID 2 barrel 8-cylinder heavy duty
R = 272 CID 4 barrel 8-cylinder heavy duty
J = 302 CID 2 barrel 8-cylinder
A = 302 CID 4 barrel 8-cylinder
K = 332 CID 2 barrel 8-cylinder
S = 332 CID 4 barrel 8-cylinder

y - Model Year Code
---------------
3 = 1953
4 = 1954
5 = 1955
6 = 1956

p - Paint Code
---------------
A = Raven Black
B = Nocturne Blue (dark blue)
D = Diamond Blue (light blue)
E = Colonial White (two-tone cab only)
G = Meadowmist Green (light green)
H = Platinum Gray
M = Goldenglow Yellow
R = Torch Red
U = Meadow Green
S = Special

nnnnn - Production Unit Number
------------------------------

I think these lists are inclusive except for factory special orders. The shop manual and other Ford approved reference material I have is fairly authoritative but, of course, I could have translated the information incorrectly and there is always a chance of an error or omission.

I'm curious to know what you've got since I'm currently restoring a '56 F-250 myself.

Cheers,

Earl

Charles,

It is time to get a chainsaw and go for it. No cottonmouths or spiders this time of year.

Get in there and find out what you've got!

Looking forward to more pics,
/Kris

Not to rain on your parade or anything but a truck buried in bushes for years may be more valuable as a parts/donor vehicle than a restorer. I had the opportunity to buy a daily driver (56 COE) for 4 grand a while back. 6 tires will run nearly a thousand and just a few more parts after that and your in over 4 not counting your labor.

I hate to see sittin there as much as anyone but brace yourself.
