OK, I'm thinking about buying some Toyo MTs in 33/12.50/20 with a max load of 2,600 lbs at 65psi for my stock 20in wheels. My stock Goodyr ATS are 34.1/11.30/20 with a max load of 3,750 lbs at 80psi.
Will the Toyos have enough load capability for the heavy SD?
Do you fellers think they will look too small on the truck since they are a bit smaller in diameter?
Those Toyos sound like they're load range D to me, not the load range E like comes on these trucks. If you never haul a heavy load or tow anything they might be OK, but I wouldn't put Ds on my truck. I'm looking at going up a size from 265/75 to 285/75 but am finding limited choices in a load range E tire. I do know Toyo makes the Open Country MT in the 285/75 in a E rating, maybe they make your size that way too?
I think the Toyo's are bad if you are going to haul anything... and I mean anything... you wanna get at least a load range D 3105# and up tire for our SD trucks. Just my opinion.... get a BFG A/T 315 or something.... good look, aggresive tire
I'm thinking buying ProComp Xterrain 3 ply 33/13.5R18 load range "E" @3525lbs to replace the 18" Conti's 275/70R18 on my '06 F350 CC PSD stock Lariat wheels. Or am looking at PC's 33/13.5R20's (equiv. to 325/50R20) on PC's Series 6001 20" wheel. The 20" tire is a "D" @3085 lbs. What are opinions please. I do not want to put a lift package to accommodate the 20's. Or would I have to. The 20's are same diameter as the 18's but do sacrifice load. I plan to switch between the 18's and 20's when and if I pull a 36' 5th wheel. For unloaded conditions I would run around w/ the 20's for aesthetics.
Unless you do haul a lot of weight, load range D tires will be fine. my 305 70 16 procomp Xterrain tires do just fine. The heaviest thing I pull is my 20ft boat and trailer.
The Toyos I mentioned (33/12.50/20 MT) are said to be load range E but only have a load rating of 2,600 lbs at 65psi. That's what seems so strange to me.
Load range is just that - a range. To qualify for E, you have to be able to handle some minimum X lbs. at some cold pressure.
That said, generally, a 65psi max is a load range D tire.
To be safe at the GVWR on your sticker, you need a tire that's rated for 3,640lbs @ 80psi. Right now, that includes the stock Conticraps, BFG A/T KOs, Wrangler SilentArmor, and maybe one or two more.
I wouldn't run those light load range tires. Look at a bigger size and you will find a larger load capacity. Even at load range D a larger size will give you a higher load capacity.
I agree that 2600lbs is a bit on the light side but to say a load range D is unsafe is complete BS. The letter on the side means very little, look for an actual load capacity in lbs. I have Bridgestone Revos that are D rated (I guess I'm unsafe according to you tire experts) and have a capacity of around 3100-3200lbs pre tire. I look at it this way, the rear end of my truck weighs 3k lbs emty, so this leaves me say 3,200-3,400lb for cargo or hitch weight. My truck weighs 7k emty with a full tank of fuel and me. My GVWR is 8800lbs. Technically by that I can only haul 1800lbs anyway, and if I had an F350 it would be 9900lb GVWR which would be 2900lbs of cargo weight, still 300-500lb less then the tire rating. Now I'm not sure what can of worms you guys want to open up with this thread but whos calling who unsafe for a letter on the side of a tire or exceeding the manuf. reccomended weight rating I don't think we want to get into. I personally think that the axle/tire are the limiting factor for GVWR to an extent but that again is another can of worms. and JFYI the regestration on my truck reads 11,300lb for GVWR, not that my axle or tires are up to it and I didn't ask for anything special when I regestered it, just the state making more $$$$$.
I used my truck only as an example, obviously the 07's are different and have a different GVWR, I don't want anyone jumping my case since SNEAKY F350 has an 07', I was just making the point.
