Changing steering column on 87 f150

Has anyone ever changed a non tilt steering column to a Tilt Wheel steering Column?
I got something wrong with my Cruise controll and have to lif up on the wheel before I set it, to get it to work. Then after about a mile or 2 the MPH starts slowing down about 5 MPH...
I suspect the Steering column is bad and think I will jst change it over to a tilt wheel set up.
Can someone describe what kind of job I'm getting into?
Thanks
ZZ

Not sure why your going after the stering column....The controls for the cruise are in the center of the steering wheel and can be changes in about 5 minutes. The wiring harness goes up through the steering column, but again, you can change it easily without swapping the column. That being said, the steering columns are a piece of cake to remove, 4 bolts at the base, 2 bolts under the dash, and one under the hood. If I were you, I would take a long looks at the controls in the wheel and the wiring harness to the controls before I swapped out the column.

The reason I think I need to change the column is it has up and down play in it.
Like I said I have to lift up on the steering wheel to set cruise controll I believe there must be a bushing or bearing in the column wore out.

If you need to change the column it is really not that hard. Remove the obvious nuts and bolts inside the cab and in the engine bay. Dont forget to disconnect the gear selector shaft from the rubber grommet in the engine bay side. Sounds like the movement needed to set the cruise is a wiring issue, however the momement doesnt sound right either.Have a look at it when you get it off and you may solve both issues upon closer examination.
