mainly a question about the hood on my 59
Hey, the hood on my 59 has about a 5 inch long rasied portion in the middle of the regular rasied portion of these hoods(the regular rasied portion is about 3 to 4 feet long). i want to know if the 5 inch raised portion was only on custom cab models, or if this is something else. no biggie, im just wandering. i cant show a picture cause the computer i am on is a school computer, and the system filters wont let me get to my site, so if any of yall know what this, thanks. Also, another question. On my 59 and 60 VIN plates, under the date, the 59 says 23e, and the 60 says 23k, does this mean this?:
23e= may 23rd, 1959
23k= november 23rd, 1960
just so i am reading this right. thanks again, and if i can get some pictures upload about the hood, i will.

Does the hood with the 5 inch wide raised center section have slots in the front part of the hood on either side of the Ford Badge? I think that would make it a 60 hood. If you have a ventilated name plate on the front of the hood that spells out FORD, then you have a 59 hood.
Ford did not always make changes at model year change over back then.
When something got designed, they tested it and brought it into production often without waiting for a model change over.

Hi Russel,
Yours is the "typical" '59 pickup hood (If the hood in question is the one shown on your site). It came on both standard and custom cabs (except for on the '59 "big" F-series trucks like the F-1100 which used the '57-'58 style hoods). That raised portion was added to the '59 hood for strength soon after production of the '59 model year had already started. Most '59's have the hood with the raised portion like yours, but there are a few out there without it. There's an F-350 with the early hood on E-bay right now.
Date codes:
('59 model year) 23E......23rd day of the month, month of May 1959
('60 model year) 23K......23rd day of the month, month of October 1959
Hope this helps.

ok kenny. thanks for all the info, i really appreciate it. Kenny, you have the same kind of hood as i do. on your white 59. anyway, if for waited till mid year to add the middle rasied section, then how come a Time ad for the 59 fords that came out in august showed that the 59 series, that were manufactured in agust, they show that the trucks dont have that 5 inch raised portion. check out my site, and look for the ads section, and look under the 1959 link, and look at the ads, the one with the "59 ford has 25.2% more MPG" that ad was in august Time, and no rasied portion. thanks for anymore info

nice59fordf100,
I doubt the ad folks for Ford took a new picture every time they wanted to put a new ad out. I suspect the date on the magazine may have little to do with the date the truck shown was actually manufactured.
I can't open either of the links you posted so I can't read the ad copy but unless it SPECIFICALLY refers to the "New Ford Hood Design" or some such advertising drivel I wouldn't try to date my hood by the month the magazine came out. My opinion is that the 59 looks pretty spiffy with either hood.
Earl

mainly a question about the hood on my 59
Hi Russel,
The raised portion was added to the hood very early into production, and not mid-year.
I'm with Earl on this one. I don't think they would have changed all their artist's renderings that they were using since late 1958 to reflect a very small change. Though I didn't see the ad, they must have used a picture of a very early '59 model for their August ad.
The few trucks I've seen without the "raised portion" all dated back to Sept. 1958 production.
I agree that both hoods look great too!
The links would not open for me neither.
