For the last couple days my steering has been making a squeaking noise... but not at the pump or the belt, sounded like it was coming from the steering wheel. Steering hasn't felt great lately, but I thought it was the wind (60mph+ lately).
Today I start it, and let it warm up as I load the generator in the back of the truck, and I hear a rattle type noise. Pop the hood, and it sounds like there is a bearing going in the PS pump...
Does this happen? I'm almost afraid to drive it, in fear of throwing the belt...
I'm not the type of guy to throw parts at it either, even though the pump is only $70, and a new serp belt is $30.
I doubt it is old enough for the column joints to be deteriorated, but they could be drying out. Start by grabbing parts and shaking/wiggling them. It wouldn't hurt to try putting a wrench on the gear box bolts, I have heard of them coming loose and making noises.
I have had seals blow out of the p/s pump, but never a bearing.
If the wheel is striaght and it is ticking, the pressure is minimal, so the pump shouldn't be straining, so the lines should be stationary. So that would leave the input and out shaft on the gearbox. If the pump's beaings are going, then the ticking should increase with RPM and load. If you haven't replaced the belt in a few years, I would go head and do for maintance's sake.
I would pay close attention to the hard lines, it could be as simple as air in the lines, or the motor is shaking and causing the hard lines to tap on something. Then at load, the lines stress away from the other parts.
