Paint details on a 2 tone '59 stepside

G'Evening guys!!

I am getting ready to have the whole she-bang painted. Motor box, interior, between the cab & bed, etc.

Am changing from a special fleet color to a 2-tone. Am envisionining a turquoise on white. Having trouble finding info on where the turquiose stops and the white start. It seems like I've seen some where the color wrapped up over the cab.

And what's what in the cab? I am intentially leaving the original US Marine OD behind the gas tank and will label it as the original color. But which color is on the dash versus the dashboard? Interior doors. etc? Were these white trucks that had the 2nd color painted only on the exterior?

Anyone have images posted or have a digital camera? I am not above being overly complimentary in exchange for some pics.

Tanks in advance!!

Hi Greg,
I believe the two tone effect was only available on the stylesides in 1959, so I can't really help you much as far as the bed is concerned. For the cab, check out this link:
https://www.ford-trucks.com/dcforum/48_60/649.html
In it you will find a link to an accurately painted '58. Also in this thread there is a black and white shot of the interior of a '59. You can see from the shading that the darker color was on top of the dash, and white on the bottom half. You can also see the doors. I hope this helps you.

Paint details on a 2 tone '59 stepside

Hi Kenny

It never occurred to me that the stepside wouldn't have a 2-tone option. Changing the color from the VIN is heresy enough, I won't muddy the waters with an unavailable paint combination. I can see somebody arguing 15 years from now that they have an unmolested 2-tone stepside.

Were all of the colors available to the stepside or was the color pallet limited there as well?

In a single tone, I assume that other than the actual dash insert, everything else was the same color as the exterior.

What color were the rims typically painted?

I guess the good news is that the paint job just got cheaper.

I want to paint the motor box, interior, between the cab and the bed, as well as the exterior. I'll pull the motor and strip the interior. There is a very small spot of rust in one of the running boards and at the base of the bed. I want the painter to do the sanding, lead those two rust spots and take out a half dozen dings.

Any ball park estimates on a paint job? I'll post that question out on the forum as I don't expect too many people to find this question under this subject.

As always, thanks for your help,

Greg

Hi Greg,
All of the 1959 truck colors were available for both the Flareside and Styleside. The Two-tone consisted of any available color combined with Colonial white.

To better explain my last post, I do strongly believe that the Two-tone wasn't available on the Flareside.
Since Ford did perform "Special order" paint jobs though, I suppose the possibility does exist that maybe a rare few could have been ordered that way. I personally doubt it, and believe special order paint was just for solid colors other than those available. I've never seen one myself, nor any documentation to prove that there were any.
If you did decide to go the route of "Two-tone", I don't think anyone would look down on you. In fact, it would probably look pretty sharp!

You are correct on the solid color paint job. The interior color would match the exterior, with the exception of the dash bezel.

The rims were painted white.

The price of paint jobs vary as to what kind of finish you are looking for. A lot of it has to do with the preparation work involved. Paint jobs can go from cheap, to flawless show quality.

I hope this helps.

Hmmm - I do have the "S" paint code....

That does make for a viable case for the 2-tone stepside....

Hmmm

As always, thanks for your advice. It is creative as well as informed.

Have a great day!!
