Post Exhaust Manifold Gaskets

I'm replacing the exhaust manifolds on the early '70's 302 in my '51 F-1. Any recomendations on gaskets? Copper, etc.....? Going thru short pipes into glass packs. Any tips would be appreciated. Thanks!

My 51f1 got its fresh mid 70s 302 this winter, replacing tired 289. In both cases, I used the Felpro supplied overhaul kit exhaust gaskets. Never a problem. 289 had 20 years on its gaskets. Would have more, if I'd paid attention to the water temp gauge.
Just install and torque per the instruction sheet.

I apreciate the advise. I used the FelPros. Got the manifolds in but it's too cold today in the garage to run the pipes. Supposed to be in the 40's tomorrow......damn, gotta wait to rumble!

I have personally never used exhaust manifold gaskets. Ford didn't use them from the factory. Both surfaces are machined and as there is really no large amount of pressure, there is no need for a tight seal. I suppose that the gaskets produced by Fel-Pro and others would work just fine, but I've never had an exhaust leak without them and there is zero chance of blowing one out. Now if you exhaust manifold flanges were severely pitted, that might be different. Gaskets may be mandatory there. I do always use gaskets on headers, and nothing but the best. Those crazy little bolts are too much trouble to have to get to very often!

Now that is something I did not know....exhaust manifolds did not come with gaskets when ford produced the f-1's..... I know when you buy the engine kit now, from supply houses, they come with the exhaust manifold because I used the one given. One of those black cardboard ones which are junk as far as I am concerned. ...jim
