I?m in the process of replacing the tail pipe on my 49 F1 with six cylinder engine. I would like to keep the system stockish looking but there is no trace left of the original to use as a guide.
Question. Does the original tail pipe go from the muffler all the way straight to the back of the truck on the inside of the frame? Or, does it kick out to the right in the back like most new trucks? Are there any turn downs at the end? Thanks
The pipe goes from the muffler back over the rear axle and out the passenger side back corner. Just below the brake light.
Sacramento vintage ford has this pipe already bent to fit.$55.00

Thanks for the info. I should be able to get the shape pretty close from what you told me. There is a local bender that is very reasonably priced so I will probably bend my own. In addition, I'm going to run 2" pipe. I thought that this might be just a little bigger then stock. To get to the back right corner, does the pipe angle out about 45 degrees from just behind the axle?
Don,
That is how mine is bent, and i purchased mine from Sacramento.
It bends after the axle and then goes out the passenger side corner.
It is like a 45º angle. The only difference between my truck and yours is mine is a flathead 8. I think the same pipe was used on both engines though.
The tailpipe is the same for a 6 or a 8 cyl. As for the angle it's not supposed to be a 45 degree angle. it's probably more like a 22-1/2 degree. I have a NOS tailpipe(Ford) for mine and it seems like a compound bend. It comes over the axle, then is straight for a short section and then bends down and over towards the side.
Nothing wrong qith the repo stuff, At least someone is finally making stuff for these trucks. There was a long period of time where nothing was being made for exhaust and you had to patch and jury rig stuff to keep it going!
I have a 48 with a 6 cyl engine, The crossmember right behind the engine has a hole the size of an exhaust pipe with 120 degree bolt hole pattern. Was the original pipe suppose to go through that?
