Thumbs up Mileage---non-towing

For anyone curious about "empty" highway (distance) mileage...who either owns or is interested in owning a '99-'03 psd......Recent trip stats:

Charlotte (NC) to Beaufort (NC).....and back again.....

1. Fueled in Concord.....drove to Beaufort and fueled there....

313 miles. 15.72 gallons. [B]19.9mpg

2. Fueled in Kinston.....drove to Concord and fueled there....

235 miles. 9.707 gallons. [B]24.20mpg

*Not too bad for a 444ci engine.......Again...there was NO load (just me and some gear).....and mostly Interstate (85 and 40) and 4-lane highway (Hwy 70) with scattered towns and a few lights.......

**Mostly on cruise control.....60mph...or 65mph....or 70mph where the Interstate speed limit specified it.

2000 crew-cab 4X4 psd....no mods and all stock......

Wow, that is awesome. My shoe size is 15 and my mileage shows it. Damn that is a really good mileage, 24 hmmmm. I don't worry about mileage, when it's empty i fill it up. I do however calculate it for the heck of it, and last tank i had 13something with 1.17 CF corrected mileage.

I would love to get even 16 mpg. the last 2 times i've checked, i get around 11 and some change but i did have a leaky seal on the back of the fuel bowl. so maybe the mileage will improve a little now that that's fixed. but 24. is that possible on these trucks?

Left some stuff out......I tend to run about the same as you, Beeboy......Just for a caveat....I've NEVER hit 24mpg in the past......My previous highest was a tad under 21mpg.........

3.73 gears.......Uniroyal 265s.......Automatic tranny.........

Still......Kinston to Raleigh is pretty flat, and just a few stops in Smithfield, Clayton, etc.......From Raleigh to Durham and beyond...a few rolling hills, but nothing major.......Just took it easy and mostly had cruise on 60 or 65....and caught most of the lights in the towns on "green".....Durham and Burlington south on I85 to Salisbury and Charlotte....couple of spots with 70mph speed limit, mostly gentle, rolling hills...traffic wasn't bad......Just kept on cruising nice and easy......

Possible...I did it...but as I told Beeboy....I've NEVER gotten 24mpg in the past, and my previous high was just under 21........

Do a 7500 mile oil change....Just changed oil and filter and air filter about 500 miles ago.......Have reasonable tires on the truck (Uniroyal 265s) and keep them max-inflated........Again, I didn't have any load except a couple hundred pounds of gear.......

Probably the truck was taken care of before me. I bought it June 2005 with only 40000K on the OD, and it's a 2000.......Looked like it was well-cared-for.....And I'm trying to continue that tradition (haha).....

BUT.....Like Beeboy.....in my usual driving (I commute in it also)....I generally get about 15mpg city, and 18 to 19 if mostly highway driving with a little commute thrown in..........

Wow! Best I've done unloaded is 15.9. 2002 4X4 CC Dually 60K miles. But not many flat stretches here in NM. You are either always climbing or always into a big head wind no matter which way you go. I just got back from a 1400 mile round trip down to Puerto Penasco Mexico. The best I did with my 4,000lb Caribou camper and towing my 3,000lb Jeep was 12.5mpg between Hatch, NM and Tucson, AZ. Not bad considering the load. I guess next time I could cut down on the amount of beer I bring...... NAAAAAAAA

I just bought my 02' CC 4x4 in September and i was only getting 13/14 mpg in the first couple of tanks.
i changed the oil, replaced the fuel, air, and oil filters, and put in 16oz of diesel kleen with every tank full an now i'm averaging around 16/17. i have to keep my foot off the gas to get those numbers. i do a 50/50 split of commuter driving and highway driving. seems that the truck runs it's best on the highway at 70mph at 2k rpms. i wonder if i could break 20mpg if i did a whole tank worths of driving at 70 mph.... sounds like a road trip to me!

I've heard numerous members mention diesel-kleen, but I've never used the stuff myself.......

Again....still got the unsightly, original air cleaner box under the hood and the original pipe........Those are the only two things I'm considering changing........

Hey, you know, if it ain't broke....blah, blah, blah............
