I blew the engine on my 54 today!!!

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 26-Mar-02 AT 05:57 AM (EST)]Dewayne,

WOW! That is one sweet ride on your web page! Looks like that is the direction I'm heading. Is there a particular year of 302 I should be looking for? The guy said they run the engine in the car, if it runs good, they tear it out - not sure if they are set up to run on a stand. How much extra work/fabrication is it to put in the 9 inch rear at the same time? any tips on what to do and NOT do? odds and ends to make sure I get? steering column?

With any engine swap you are going to have to adapt to different motor mounts. There are bolt in motor mounts for a 302 in a F100 available. You will have to modify the drive shaft if you use a C4 auto or if you replace the diff with a 9 inch, then a new drive shaft will be needed, at least new to you, due to different length, U joints and yoke. The exhaust will not bolt up without mods, You will need to check the clearnce between the drivers side exhaust and the steering column/box but should be able to fabricate or switch to headers to keep the dual exhaust. You may need to change the radiator if the hoses don't line up with the outlet and inlet. You will also need a cross member for the trans mount. You will probably find other things like throttle linkage, shift linkage to work out. And don't forget the "while I am at it" syndrome may kick in.

This is just my opinion, but by the time you fork over the bucks to buy the parts do this work or worse pay someone to do it, you could have had the spare 292 rebuilt and ready to just drop in after pulling the engine. It is harder to find power steering parts such as the brackets for the 292 but it can be done. I know I did it. But at least you can be driving your truck while you are gathering parts for a power steering mod and a rear end swap.

I guess it depends on how long you can go without being able to drive your truck.

I blew the engine on my 54 today!!!

Well guys, after alot of looking and good advice from the board, I decided to go with a 351w with a c4. Looked hard for a 302, which are very common, but finding a decent low mileage one is pretty tough around here. Rebuilding the 292 was going to be near the price range of doing the conversion, and it wasn't original anyway. I'm getting the 351w from a 78 T-bird with 70K, supposed to be in good shape. The c-4 will go to the original 3.91 rear. The PO had redone the drum brakes with a Kantor system in '99, so I may just stick with that for now. Install starts in a few days......any more advice with the "while I'm at it syndrome......." is much appreciated.

TIA,

Henry

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 25-Apr-02 AT 01:34 PM (EST)]Henry,

... add a photo of your 54 in your gallery. It appears that yours is the bone stock daily driver type and that's what I like. Look at my 54 in my gallery ! It made it from Texas to Germany sometime in the late 70s. Cheers
