The ABS Light Delima

So just curious if anyone else has had this problem. Here is the log.

Subject: 2006 F350 Lariet ABS Light

To Whom It May Concern:

This is a log of the ABS Light problem that I have been having for the past 8 months since purchase of above truck.

1. May 2006 (4368 miles) – While towing a empty car hauler the ABS light came on. The cruise control was activated then suddenly stopped. I reset the cruise control and it stopped aging along with the ABS light kicking on. The light stay on for approximately another 130 miles. The following day the ABS Light had reset. I stopped at Cal Worthington Ford but was told that they could not look at my truck unless the light was on.
2. June 2006 ( 5200 miles) – Same situation as above except it occurred while leaving Anchorage and heading back to Valdez. Stayed on the entire 305 miles.
3. July 2006 ( 6500 miles) – Once again the same situation as above. Occurred while heading back to Valdez. This time I did observe that right before the ABS light kicked on the Spedo dropped to zero than jumped back up to highway speed as the ABS Light kicked on.
4. August 2006 (Started at 7800 miles) – This time I was towing my 36’ 5ther on a 2000 mile trip through the Yukon. About 150 miles from Valdez it kicked on and stayed on the entire trip. This also occurred with a side trip to Skagway without the trailer. The only exception is that I was able to utilize the Cruise Control on this side trip.
5. Oct 2006 (10500 miles) – Same story with 5ther but to Fairbanks this time. Seekings Ford had no techs available when I stopped in.
6. Nov 2006 (11500 thru 14500 miles) – Three trips to Anchorage. Two with trailer and one without. In all cases same issue with ABS. I did stop in Cal Worthington the morning of the 3rd trip and was told this time that they did not necessary need the ABS Light on to look at the truck. Talked with the Service Rep about speed sensors in the wheels and he informed me that it was more than likely the Speed Sensor computer. Might not have that exactly right.
7. Nov 2006 (14500 Mile) – Wife driving to school to pick up kids. She stated the spedo just quite working for 10 minutes then magically began working again. Of course when it started the ABS Light kicked on.

So as you can see it initially started with towing trailer but has progressed to doing it with or without a trailer attached. Will try to established an appointment in Dec to have this looked at.

Sounds like an intermittant wiring issue which could be in the computer, cabling or sensors. If it is the cabling that is a beach to isolate, may only happen while moving on a bumpy road.

Also slight chance... maybe a vacuum hose is disconnected or has an intermittant leak. On my 94, which could be vastly different from your 06, there are some vacuum lines on the air conditioner air box on the passenger side. Almost everytime I work on the engine on that side, I manage to work one of the lines loose and this will do various things inclduing cause problems with ABS and cruise. The connectors can come unplugged but look OK, so unless you luck out and find one hanging or like in my case, done it enoguh times, you may not find the problem. It is a very easy fix, just remove the connector and plug it back in.

Good Luck,

Jim Henderson

Since you are loosing the speedo right before the ABS light comes on...that leaves me to believe that the issue is the VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor). This is located in on top the rear axle differential. It is a common issue with the SD's...and will trigger the ABS...as they are linked in the PCM program.

Good luck...

Did no one replace the speed sensor? Like the other guy said, that is a common problem, even with my year truck. I assumed with as many trips to the dealer, that this was checked. That is a $60 fix if that is the problem.

Good Luck,

I had a similar issue. My ABS module was not communicating with the cluster. After ford reprogrammed my new cluster to my new VSM, my ABS light has not come back on. If you have time, let ford plug in thier scanner and try to comunicate with the ABS system and cluster.

I have to go to Anchorage for a Dentist Appt so I Figure I'll let them have the truck while I am there to see what they find. This morining I just started it up to warm up and the ABS kicked on. To bad the Yellow light cant be dimmed. Considering electrical tape over it so I dont have to see the glare.
