Here is some info on the cables http://www.tirechain.com/CABLE_MOUNTING_INTRUCTIONS.HTM
One item of note is that from what I have seen in UT, WY, MT & ID if you have snow tires and 4 wheel drive, chains are not required. I always run studded snow tires (in the winter) and have never found myself to be in violation of any State laws in regard to mountain pass requirements. Also, there are a few A/T tires which supposedly meet the Severe Snow rating including BFG A/T but only in certain sizes.
If your tires are not M&S rated, carry chains no matter the vehicle. If they are not, you have a hard rubber compound and they will get very slick when cold, even if they have an aggressive tread.
In Nevada you are not likely to have a problem with authorities, but Calif is a different story.
If you have the right tires and plenty of snow experience you should be OK. But even good trucks with good tires can slide off the road.
The thing to remember is, if you can't go, it's discouraging. But if you can't stop, you're screwed.
Last year here just east of San Diego there was some snow. So I took my 1 year old son out to see it and play. There were a few roads that only had a couple of inches and they wouldn't let anyone go through without chains. I thought it was pretty funny since there was only a couple of inches down. I told them I was from northern Idaho but they weren't letting anyone go through.
Hey all you guys that drive in the deep snow with big tires, what brand and tread do you preffer? I have had the best luck with BFG mud terrains in the deep snow.
