Starting problems on my 66 F100

What's up? I was wondering if you guys could offer some advise. Recently my 66 broke down on me going down the highway. It turns over but doesn't start. I checked to make sure the fuel pump was operating and it is. Also, I get a fuel smell when trying to start. I pulled a plug wire, put a plug in it and put it against the block for ground and had my wife turn the truck over. I'm not getting any spark. Given the fact that everything looks original, I decided just to start replacing things.(spark plugs and wires are fairly new) I replaced the ignition coil, cap and rotor button yesterday but still nothing. I've decided to go after the distributor(it looks original). Maybe the points are bad or something. Any help that you guys can provide would be greatly appreciated. By the way, I'm new to the site, just joined today.

bootleg667, Welcome to FTE & the 61-66 forum The nations #1 truckstop for ol Ford truck tech support.

Points can stop you in your tracks, and I would start there first, it has happened to me.

I did go to the Petronix electronic upgrade and haven't had a problem there since.

Hope ya get back on the road soon.

What's up guys? Just replaced the entire distibutor and the truck starts up good. I'm having trouble keeping an idle once the truck has run for a while. I've adjusted ignition timing, but only by turning the distibutor until the engine runs as smooth as I can get it. I'm wondering if the rotor is off a little maybe. Does anyone have any pointers for adjusting timing?

Rick
