Hi,
I know that the "Instrument panel cover assembly" (padded dash) was an option on the 1959 F-series, but I'm just curious. Have any of you actually ever seen one?
Photo courtesy of Jim Osborn Productions, inc. (with permission), from their "1959 Ford Truck Body, Trim, & Sealant assembly manual". This is a great book, and it is available here on the online store.
Now you have given me another question. What kind of dash (instrument panel) is that in the illustration? There are three large round holes. I'm seeing a tach, speedo, and vacuum guage. Of course I'm guessing since you can't see anything. So what goes in all those holes.
That dash would be for a big Ford truck. The two additional gauges are air pressure and mechanical tach. Those instrument panels were used after 1960 on some big Fords (maybe the cabover style). Some truck instrument panels had little gauges where the idiot lights were(generator and oil pressure IIRC).
There was a man with a 59 longbed at the all-Ford show in Carlisle, PA last weekend that had a totally restored truck that came with the padded dash. He had retained the chrome trim that held it down, but had not re-padded the dash. He had literature showing it as an option. It was one of the nicest restorations I have seen to date! He had re-padded the visors.
Sam I have never seen a padded dash on
light trucks however we had padded dashes on
1957 & up 10 wheel dump trucks with custom cabs.
Inside was red & white with chrome, horn ring
white steering wheel, tack air, radio, and beleive
it we bought a '59 with A/C, 534 CID 5x4 power
steering, chrome grille the most classiest truck
on the road*********
um, hi, does anyone have an autual picture of a padded dash? Id like to try and get on on my truck (thats just me) but ive read that the padded dash was an option, espessially on custom cabs (mine) but i would still like to see it and possibly convert one to my truck (if i ever get done with it) thanks
Hi,
Sorry, I don't have an actual picture, just the one from the trim and sealant manual. I've never seen one myself, and I'm not sure where you would find one to add to your truck. These were an option, but seem to have been rarely ordered. No one is re-producing them for our years. If you do get lucky enough to find one in a salvage yard, I'd hate to guess what kind of shape it would be in after 42 years. Maybe you'll get lucky though. Good luck!
