Need to pull engine

I was told I need a new head gasket on my '99 Power Stroke. They said they had to pull the engine to do the head gasket job...is that necessary? I didn't know you had to pull an engine to do a head gasket. TC

I've heard that for pan gasket, but I honestly never heard a need for a new head gasket without dumping a TON of boost through the motor.

What are the symptoms ?

The heads can be removed without pulling the engine. you will need a floor crane and a special adapter Ford makes to use as a lift point though.

If you need the procedure let me know.

Is it the driver's side head or the passenger side? You have all of the HVAC stuff on the right side to deal with, and it's a little easier to get to things on the left side. If it's the right side, pulling the head in-frame is easier than removing the entire engine.

If you do remove the heads, get the ARP head studs. It will make it a WHOLE LOT EASIER if it happens again - plus they aren't torque to yield bolts.

Mr Ford is doing the work. I do not know which side is bad . I posted obout the radiator cap over flow. They did a compression check & said head gasket. I was hoping a injector sleeve. Talked to the mechanic and he said he would call me back. That was two days ago. He said he would have to pull the motor to do the head gasket. It is like an "operation room." They won't let you see what is going on, won't tell you anything...all they have are those $$$$$$$ in their eyes. I may have screwed up taking it to Mr. Ford. I am a great believer that if you once pull out the engine you will never get it all hooked back together. Guess I need to take a box for all of the extra parts that were left over.
