Post '49 F-1 Cross member changes?

Okay, we're leaning towards putting a 302 with auto trans in this F-1.

Any body have any experience with changing that transmission cross member mount?

If we move it back it'll mean moving the master cylinder. Any brake pedal problems we should know about?

Motor's out, working on cleaning up frame, etc.

Thanks in advance

Wendy

Most people who want to keep the stock pedals cut the crossmember and put a another one farther down. You would probaly have to do alot of triming to make the transmission fit the crossmember. You could also put the master cylinder on the firewall.

I ran a 302 and C4 in my 48 for many years befor deciding to do a complete street rod project on it. In my case I simply modified the stock trans crossmember by trimming the rounded area out, where the original trans bolted up, and welded in a 1/4 flat steel plate with a couple of gussets to reinforce it. Drilled the plate for the new trans mount and that was it. This set up worked fine for many years and did not disturb the stock set up.

I'd like to retain the original crossmember in my 48 also if possible. I haven't gotten far enough along to drop the engine in yet and determine if I can use it. What about the height of the transmission? What did you have to do to the floor to accomodate the C4? I assume you used a transmission tunnel of some type?

I have a 302/c-4 combo in my '51. I cut the center out of the original crossmember and built a bolt-in piece to replace it. There are no clearance problems with the original tranny cover.
