Lower ball joint "mount inboard" question

97 Expedition, 148,000, 5.4 engine.

Replacing upper arm & ball joints and lower ball joints.

I bought Moog replacements. The upper is already installed in the new arm. My question is on the lower joint.

The rubber cover has a lineup mark that reads "mount inboard". Instruction say to place this mark and gease relief passage directly away from the wheel assembly. I'm assuming this means to point the mark towards the middle of the truck, oil pan, other wheel, etc.

Here's my confusion.. I haven't removed the ball joints on the right side of the truck yet. The right lower ball joint (I believe it's the original) has this mark also on the boot but it's facing towards the front of the truck or slightly towards the radiator.

Don't want to press these in incorrectly and would appreciate any help with this.

Thanks, Ken

The only reason it says that is when you grease them, there is a cut out on the boot for the excess grease to escape. By mounting them AWAY from the wheel.. they squirt away from the wheel and not ONTO the wheel... getting grease in your wheel could get grease on your brakes... which you do not want to happen.

It doesn't need to be perfect.. just pointing in a direction away from the wheel.

Good luck

ball joints

Thanks.. I finished the job last night. Installed them with the arrow pointing towards the center. I assumed the line up was for that purpose but wanted to make sure the pivot angle wasn't limited and I'd end up breaking or wearing out the new parts.

moog ball joints

Has any body had any issues with moog ball joints? I heard that moog quality wasn't like it used to be, I was told to use napa chasie. Is this true or is it just a preferance issue.

While Moog has "moved production off-shore" to places like India etc their quality still seems as good as ever. I don't have a lot of experience with NAPA's better chassis parts so can't/won't speak to that.

Buying through Amazon I found Moog stuff for 40% less than my paltry discount locally could find. Amazon will/has warranty replace(d) anything covered under Moog's lifetime guarantee---free shipping both ways on returns too. I've had absolutely no issues with Moog stuff over three different E250's.

Hey JWA thanks for the reply, I have always liked moog, I didn't think about amazon having moog, I have gotten my stuff on Rock Auto. And again thanks for the reply.
