7.3L performance Headers

I read Truckin' magazine from Primedia. in issue Vol-32 No-12, dated October 23, 2006 - on page 113 I see a company called "Blown Away" which makes Stainless Steel headers for the 7.3L PSD. See item #5 on this page.

Has anyone received any information on the headers they sell. I have tried for days attempting to contact them via telephone. The line is always busy.

Please share any information you may have on these headers.

Thanks,
Scott.

That line right there tells me everything I ever need to know about that company.

I tried several times to contact them and finally got through, the person told me they were only available through DIESEL INNOVATIONS
they are priced at like $1500 or so

I could think of better mods for $1500. It would make a good down payment on big oil.

This has been discussed here before. I would say that they would absolutely be beneficial in evening out the exhaust pulse or pressure seen at the turbine. Of course this would only work if they were equal length headers, but I cannot begin to guess what kind of overall benefit it would have on a diesel. I know equal length headers are the cat's meow for turbo gassers.

IIRC there were some concerns over the longevity of the headers due to the gauge of steel used in the tubing and the cycles they would need to endure but I cannot comment on that and don't know if any data is available for that. I will say that our up pipes are sandwiched between two hefty pieces of iron and they are of a thinner walled steel tubing variety. Expansion/contraction does not appear to be a huge issue there although there are those donut gaskets which may be the reason for that.

I would have to agree that $1500 would probably be better spent elsewhere but some heavily modded folks would be ideal candidates for them. Those looking to squeeze out every last bit if you will.

I don't know that they are completely necessary. There are several high HP trucks out there who still run stock manifolds. Like some others, I think that $1500 could be spent elsewhere to see more gain in power. There probably is some gain to be had, but it would be one of the last things on my list. Also, DI had some issues with the first few sets of headers cracking...I don't know if it was resolved or not.

I contacted them by email about headers for my '02 Excursion and here is their response:

We currently have no dealers in your area and are wanting to find one. If you know someone that is in that area, let them know and send us there information. We are currently selling these ourselves for the time being but will go back to the dealer status in the next 6 months. The current price is $1050.00 uncoated and $1150 coated.
I am currently at the factory in Thailand but will be home the end of Dec. When I get home will will be installing a set of these on a Excursion for before and after testing. Our current testing is on a 2002 6speed, but is not sufficient for real good data. What we have found out in that the turbo response is about 1/2 and the EGT's are lowered about 125 under power. They also eliminated a lot of smoke at the intial tip in of the trottle, because of the much faster turbo boost rise.

Stay in touch and I will let you know the testing results.

Headers do make sense since they can keep the exhaust gas velocity up whihc will help the turbo spin up faster. They are a popular mod on Porsche Turbos for that reason....just way more expensive.

A set of good headers will help a turbo spool much quicker. Definitely if you're running a bigger turbo.

100% true $1500 can do a lot to one of these teucks but not if its into some headers. Like you said thats last ditch kind of stuff.

After almost 17 years, headers for a 7.3 are still unnecessary and are short-term race stuff due to cracking tubes/welds. Racing a non-competitive platform like a 7.3L is a waste of money anyway.

Headers on a motor that turns less than 3500 rpm, just... nah.
