An interesting assortment of 1/4 ET times

For some cars new and old. It's kinda neat to see just how a newer family sedan can be almost as fast as many "Muscle" cars of old
Year Make model 0-60 1320 et
1968 Chevrolet Corvette 427 6.3 14.1
1973 Dodge Charger SE 440ci 7.4 15.2
2005 Ford Mustang GT 4.6L V8 5.1 13.5
2004 Honda Accord EX Coupe V-6 6 Speed 5.9 14.5
1968 Lamborghini Miura V12 6.3 14.5
2002 Nissan Maxima SE 6.0 14.7
1969 Ford Mustang Mach 1 5.7 13.9
1986 Porsche 911 Turbo 5.0 13.4
2005 Dodge Magnum R/T AWD 5.9 14.5

these are the more hopped up family sedans though. The honda is as fast as they go, and the nissan is the most powerful in the line as well. I think that these could also be branded "sports-sedans".

Those results don't surprise me. Engines have improved dramatically since 1970, heck even from 1990 they've improved in efficiency, power output, economy, the works. The transmissions have improved, the tires and suspensions have improved. All of that goes towards improving the 1/4 miles times.

Also, power to weight ratios have improved, the 1969 Mustang was probably twice the weight of a Honda.

Honda lists the Accord sedan at 3125 to 3435lbs. A '69 Mustang with a BB should be almost the same weight. My stripper '65 289 3 gear was about 2750, so somewhere around 3500 for the longer, lower, wider '69 would be right.

One of the problems with the FE big blocks running the 1/4 mile in stock trim was torque, a lot of it and it was causing traction problems. When motor trend tested these cars, it was totally stock, even the tires. I had a 68 mustang gt fastback, 428 cj, 4-speed and 32 gears. It would spin through 4th gear. If I could of got that car to hook up with a set of slicks and traction bars, I'm sure it would of run in the high 12's. But on the stock tires, it was low 14's spinning all the way.

The other thing to consider is that the aftermarket brings much of the new school of engine building to the old school muscle cars. Guys that rig their engines right can achieve around a thousand hp on pump gas. Hook that up and I doubt a family sedan can catch it.
