Thumbs up 97 Powerstroke Replacement

I've got a 97 6 door stretched F350 with 290,000 miles. Used to drive every day now want to just use it for a rodeo hauler. During bodywork, paint, some frame work etc. I want to rebuild/or replace the engine. I've heard both sides of the story CRATE vs REBUILD. I'd like to know, if I'm willing to spend the money, can I get a bigger badder engine in this platform? I'm really looking for a serious hauler and screaming performance.

Driving an 03 4X4 Excursion 6" lift, edge chip, 35" tires on 17" wheels and last but not least another 7.3!

Depends on where the crate engine comes from or who is doing the rebuild. You can be short on quality either way. The rest are bolt on go fast parts like a bigger turbo.

My mech. suggested a ford dealer crate for about 7500-8000 dollars plus 1000-1500 for the labor. If I'm going to spend 10k or more, I don't want to go back stock.

You can rebuild your own with a good machine shop. Hardened crank and rod bearings, after market rods, fuel system, Beans diesel injectors and turbo upgrades, the list goes on...don't forget the transmission for added power.
