i went with Dolphins, i like them so far. got them for a pretty good price on Ebay, they look nice and seem to reasonably accurate. Mechanical speedo, everything else electric.

I didnt want to cut the dash for a 5 or 6 gauge set, so i did something a little different.

here is a pic

I want to keep the stock looking dash layout; has anyone put electronic speedo and ammeter/oilpressure/temp into a stock dash layout?

Do you mean you want new gauges in a frame or plate that bolts into your dash in place of the original gauges? If so there are a number of choices, analog style faces or pure digital. If you mean you want to utilize the stock rectangular shaped gauge faces with new electronic analog mechanisms? If so Mid Fifty sells new replacement gauges that fit in place of your original gauges individually or in full sets.

I like the gauges at Speedhut. You can pick from a huge array of backlight colors, gauge face colors, etc. The speedo is GPS, doesn't have to connect to the tranny. You don't need to worry about tire size either. It won't work in tunnels, but otherwise works great - but you do have to have a small magnetic antenna like on satellite radio. It also tells you your altitude, 0-60, etc.

thanks ax.....yea, want to use the original, stock face plate w/. new electronic gauges. don't know how i'll mount them behind the face plate yet; doesn't seem like any i find are the right diameter....will probably have to cut the holes bigger for the generator, oil, temp and gas gauges....really don't want to change the exterior/interior appearance at all until i can do it all............and that will take lots more saving........

topmo....that sounds slick...will check 'em out.

cooter, BEAUTIFUL gauges, interior, steering wheel........gotta be a beautiful machine!!
was that the original face plate w/ new electronic gauges?

Check the Mid Fifty catalog

I haven't seen or used them, but Mid Fifty has 12 volt replacements for the stock gauges for the 53-56 dash. They use the original bezel and would be an original look.

However, I'll probably end up with the panel Cooter 55 has. Darkside for me.

The MF replacement gauges are an exact fit into the stock instrument cluster and face, bolt right in, look exactly like originals, no modifications needed. They also have several different clusters for round and digital readout gauges similar to Cooter's.

You might want to check the Auto Meter website, they allow you to "customize" gauges interactively. Don't know if you'd like what they look like, but there are different sized gauges and you can change everything from the bezel style to the face color to the number color to the backlight color and even the indicator color. I found it quite interesting.
