Fixing french doors

On the house we bought, we have french doors leading out of our basement.

They are in rough shape, but I believe salvagable.

THe biggest concern is the fake criss cross pieces for lack of better terminology are broken.

And some of the trim around the edges of glass is broken too.

It appears that it unscrews from the inside, the screws pass through to the outside trim through the inside trim.

So in theory, if I undo the screws, can I pop the inner and outer fake pane trim then put in new trim only around the edges?

Will the glass fall out if I pull the trim?

Thanks.

It depends on the door maker and how they designed it.

I have seen it where one the insert went right to the other side of the door.

and another where they met halfway thru.

No tellin, really. You'd probably need to disect it yourself to see how the glass is mounted. Ours have wood trim around the glass that actually holds it in.

Might be time for a new pair of Freedom Doors.

I just installed a 60" set of freedom doors from Lowes. They are insulated steel doors, with dual pain glass, and gridded like yours. They were only $300 and change. They came pre-hung and weren't too hard to install. Not a bad deal at all, and probably much less of an investment of your time to install vs repair. Might be a good time to just replace the old ones with new.

Are the freedom doors like a brand thing, say Pella?

I was browsing pretty hard last night and don't recall a freedom door.

The price sounds really good...........

We were just refraining from vulgar language. We try not to say the "F" word here...
