I am hoping for some guidence with a CV boot replacement. I've never done one. This is for a 2000 Expy 4x4.
The outer right boot has a hole. Since I'll be taking the entire steering knuckle off, should I also do the inside boot for good measure? What specialized tools will I need - besides the usual sockets and air tools? For example: The boot clamp tool. I also noticed that the drive axle flange (?) has special (perforated? or whatever they're called) bolts that I'm not sure how to remove.
I have not heard any noises from this joint. When I noticed the grease was shooting out in all directions I used a grease needle to squirt more inside and then sealed the hole with a "right stuff" gasket. That's amazing stuff and has held for a couple of weeks now - but I know I'm on borrowed time.
Is it reasonable to assume the joint is OK and simply needs to be cleaned and repacked?
Any help (or links to other threads) would be appreciated!
I have not done an Expedition, but I did 95 Passport. It was a messy job, but not bad overall. The hardest part was getting the boot back on. I ended up making a tool to expand the boot and keep my hands out of the grease. I got my clamp tool at Autozone or something. I would say if you haven't been in any sand or dirt the joint is probably okay. Mine was the same situation...leaking for a couple of months actually.
Why not just swap out the entire shaft? You are going through a lot of labor, when for a little more money, you can have an all new driveshaft and not have to worry about it again?
