I have a 1997 Expedition E/B {5.4} 4x4 and I noticed a whining noise coming from the engine. Sounds like it's right around the fan blade or very close, when I turn off the engine it sounds like it's winding down to a stop, but I can't see any thing moving. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. I know how to check fluids, that's about the extent of my knowledge.
Thanks
If it sounds like it is near the fan, you could spin the fan by hand (with the engine off) and see if you hear anything rubbing. A quick visual inspection of that area should make rubbing very obvious.
Does the "winding down" stop when the pulleys stop spinning? Could give you a direction to look.
The noise continues after I shut off the engine, under the cover that sayes Triton 5.4 L for a few min., then it stops. I checked the fan it's fine. As you can tell, I know very little about engines. It's the fan cluch going bad.

Reason: New Info
I took it to the shop today and they said, what I was hearing was normal, but the fan clutch may be going out. What would be a good price to have that repaired? Any guesses?
^Air bags in the rear springs. A suspension switch in the passenger kick panel. A buzzing sound from time to time.
If they told you it was normal did they tell you what was making the noise? Perhaps the A/C system equalizing pressure? The fan doesn't spin for more than a second after you turn the motor off.
