Ping = too much or too little advance?

Ping = too much or too little advance?
I have the dreaded 400 egr ping and can't seem to eliminate it. I'm confused and don't know which way to go.
In May I rebuilt my 400 .040 over with stock internals, RV cam, milled heads .025, edelbrock intake and carb, remanufactured distributor, ignition box, fuel pump and essentials (filters plugs and such). I have since re-curved the distributor complete with flipping advance plate to smaller slot (13L), small plastic bushing around advance stop pin, lighter springs and adjustable vacuum advance. I have it running pretty good with just a slight hint of ping on hard acceleration but would feel better if there was none.
Next question, I have not touched the carb other than to set the idle and dial in the mixture screws using a vacuum gauge. Could pinging also be a result of not enough fuel?
I have not tried a higher octane fuel yet either, I don't think I raised my compression that much by milling the heads, but it is a possibility too.
I appreciate any help you guys can provide.
