blue smoke on cold starts

Sorry if this is a repost but i have surched alot an gotten some information on this. I just bought this truck a few months ago an new to the PSD. so its starten to get cold around here in WV an I have noticed blue smoke apon start up in the mornings. the thing is it will start up with no problem once the light goes out, sometime it stumbles alil but starts on first try. but have noticed a good bit of smoke when down in the mid 30's. I have not tryed using the block heater yet because i didnt think i would need it. so far i replaceed my GPR with one from Grainers an it didnt do a thing. I have checked an the relay is cylcling on with the wait light an stays on when started. Its hard to check too much here at school but will be headed home this weekend. next I pan to check the glow plugs, can I check their resistance from the valve cover harnes or do i need to pull the covers an check them there? what kind of resistance should i see for a good an bad plug? sorry for the long post, just would like to try an get rid of all the smoke.

late 99 7.3 lariate, K&N cone filter an strait pipe exhaust.
thanks
-Kurt

It will not be possible to get rid of the smoke on cold starts. It's completely normal and happens to all of us every winter. It is the nature of a cold diesel to smoke until it warms up.

The fact that you are not having any starting issues in near freezing temps suggests that your glow plugs and relay are working fine.

Some smoke is normal on a cold morning. Plugging in the block heater will certainly help quite a bit. I have an automatic timer on my extension cord running out to the truck. When I crank in the morning I have no smoke and a heater in no time.

I have a 2000 F250 Powerstroke diesel and after long runs pulling heavy trailers I would on rare occasions have blue smoke (very slight)from my exhaust. I bought some Diesel Kleen in the silver bottle and poured in about half of it (16 oz.) into my full fuel tank, the smoke was gone. This occurred this past June and has not returned. I hope this helps you out.

I have my block heater on a timer too. Depending on how cold it is i usually time
the heater for about 2 hours before starting. It's a 1000watt heater and sucks up the juice pretty good.

Yep, the timer keeps the electric bill down.

Blue smoke, whats that?? LOL, its perfectly normal AFAIK but i live where it is hot 99% of the time. We had snow 2 years ago and it made national news... You are ok, but plugging in the block heater will really help that.
