Question ran out of fuel

Ran out of fuel about 100 yards from a FREE tankful. (darn lying overhead display said 21 miles to empty!) What could I have hurt or damaged by running out of fuel? The only difference I have noticed is an increase in the diesel fuel smell in the exhaust but this may be only my imagination. I have 125,000 on my late year '99 with no mods at all. (yet!)
Thanks, CedricR.

You didn't hurt anything unless you sucked up some trash. I sure wouldn't make a habit of it though.

Things maybe a bit louder due to more air in the fuel. Keeping the tank above 1/4 full will help keep some air out of the fuel. Put a little extra DFA in the tank
to ensure good lubrication of the injectors. Bio diesel would always be my first
choice to add, if available.

She'll be a little noisy till all the air get worked out but other than possibly picking some trash up in the bottom of the tank you should be good. Might want to check the fuel filter just to be safe

The noise did worry me for a while but it's better now. I changed the filter and dumped some diesel clean in the tank. Here's hopin'.

One thing to remember is the electric fuel pumps rely on the fuel for thier lubrication.
Running your truck out of fuel is the same to your fuel pump as running your engine out of oil is to your engine.
