Surging, high RPM idle, 'miss'...???

Hey all,

Great forums.

'04 6.0l Excursion with ~48K. This morning it was surging, mostly under acceleration. I waited to see if it'd go away once it warmed up, but it persisted. Whipped it into Ford dealer and while they were opening up the bay the Excursion 'lurched' and RPMs increased 200-300RPM and stayed there. Pulled into the bay and it started to 'miss' in idle or park...I'll describe it as 'diesling'.

It did something similar last week, but went away after fuel and restarting. Tank was above half today.

Luckily, it did it at the dealership and they'll check it out. I ordered up and oil and fuel filter change, but what else could I be looking at?

It might be a couple days b/c I'm was unscheduled, but I'll post back the serv. dept. response.

Thanks.

My guess would be icp sensor and harness.

vloney,

Thanks for the reply. I've been searching this forum for info. and you are a valuable source.

The service dept. will have the vehicle overnite, so hopefully they will check initial startup stuff too. Anything you reccomend I ask the dealer to do / check?

check power balance with ids/wds at first startup, to verify injector operation. Monitor icp, ipr, vgtdc, vgtlrn. ICP may change by wiggling the harness (if so, make harness repairs, icp sensor replacement)

Update:

Service dept. just called and will have the vehicle overnite again. They want to do some testing when the vehicle is cold. Apparently, they are investigating something with 3 of the cylinders. Should know more tomorrow.
Luckily it's all covered under the 5yr/100k warranty minus $100 ded.

the best way to check for bad injectors is cold start checking(post#4, above)

Word from the shop is that they performed a power balance test and recorded misfires. Removed and replaced injectors 1, 2, 6, & 8. I don't know if the paperwork will show more detail.

Ideas on what can cause?

be prepared for injectors 3,5,7, and 4 to follow shortly. Have you ever had an oasis performed to see any previous work?

Ugh...that doesn't leave me with a lot of confidence. What causes this?
I did have a report done by my local dealership before I bought this out of town vehicle. The seller also gave me service records he had. There were a couple things regarding fuel/water separator and EGR, but nothing to do with injuectors.
Thanks for all the replies.

Your prediction may be coming true. Today on the way into work (35 mile drive...80% highway) I started to experience an 'issue'. Coasting up the exit ramp and then getting back on gas to maintain speed it felt like it started to surge again. The same lead in scenario that lead to the almost stalling out. To try to illicit a 'feeling' it kind of felt like the transmission/engine were trying to determine what gear to be in...you know that lag you can get in between?

I knew the ramp wasn't where I wanted to be stranded so I figured I'd kick it the pants a bit. It accelerated, but when I had to slow to make a turn and get back under gentle power I started to notice it again. I was w/i a mile of work, so I kicked her again and made it to work no problem and it idled good for a few minutes until I shut it down.

The very first time this happened I just shut it down and restarted it a couple of minutes later. It ran fine for about 1 week until it acted up and I took it in. Does this sound logical?

Also, since getting it back it doesn't seem to have the power boost it used to and the gas mileage has dropped off.

Any insight is always appreciated.

What Ford did ~ 2 weeks ago.
Replaced fuel filters
Replaced injectors 1, 2, 6, & 8
Power balance test
I had oil changed too.

Thanks!

I contacted the dealer about my event on 11.8.06 and they basically told be to keep driving the vehicle until I have a certifiable event to confirm against.

Today after driving into work I let the vehicle idle in neutral while I gathered my things. The RPM's kept rising/falling thru a ~200RPM range, which is uncommon.

I'm now keeping an 'event log' that will hopefully help the tech.

When I had a simular problem this past summer. They found BOTH wiring harnesses on engine was chaffed. Took 3 days to repair once parts arrived. You would be driving along then no power. then it would give you all the power you wanted in the next second.

Well I scheduled an apt. with the SD for Wednesday. Another reoccurance of the fluctuating RPM at idle (also happened 11.10.06) accompanied with a low 'who-ing' noise (hard to describe). In addition, I got a lurch while backing up my driveway. After that I sat and watched it idle and then the RPMs jumped real quick about 300 and came back down, but the engine sounded different after that...kind of louder, like on a colder start-up. This is all happening after a +30min. drive home from work. No AC compressor on.

Hopefully we'll find the culprit because my confidence in this vehicle is fading rapidly.

If you have NO satisfaction from your current dealer. If you can - go to another. Just like going to a doctor, get a second opinion.
