I'm looking for a reasonably priced code reader for an 89 F150 EFI 5.0. I know there are plenty of options near the $200 mark but since I'm not sure how much use I'll get out of it, I'm looking for a less expensive alternative. Any suggestions?

As an 89, it should be an OBD I (assuming you haven't swapped to a later engine/computer), for which you can get code readers, that come with books for between $20 and $40. Or, you should be able to have your local auto parts store run it (several do). Although I have never tried it, some of the different types of ODB I could be read with a needle of an analog multimeter. GM's OBD I could be read with a paper clip.
The OBD I readeers are cheap. I think Harbor Freight has one for under $30. I even think it is under $20.
Some OBD Is can be read by shorting out a couple pins in the plug and wathing the check engine light. THe procedure is usually decribed in the Chiltons or Haynes manuals, if the procedure is available for that model.
