Can anyone suggest a good long lasting front disc brake pad for a 1991 2wd EB Explorer? I'm only getting about 20,000 miles out of semi metallic and tried a set of cheap ceramic pads,at least the box said they were ceramic, and they arent gonna make 20,000.Any information would be greatly appreciated.Thanks.
I've had better mileage out of the ceramic than the semi metallic. I think all gen I explorers are tough on front pads. Probably because of the drum brakes in the back.
Hey Mac, I dont think that any of the pads are as good as they used to be. I tried almost all of them. If Im not mistaken, Auto Zone offers a lifetime pad. They are supposed to replace them free of charge. They are a little more expensive than some, but after two or three free sets, they would be well worh it.
I changed mine last night and i got the 25.00 ones with life time warrenty from advanced auto. I did notice on both sides that there was a little fluid on the back side of the axle.. where the brake line comes down and conncets to the wheel.. i did not see a drip or anything.. but should i be concerned??
My 1992 chewed up a set of the cheapies in 10k miles. I put a set of the mid-grade autozone pads on now. We'll see how they work.
My 94 did about the same on the last set so I was concerned the calipers were hanging up or something. I just got them replaced at Canadian Tire with a lifetime warranty on the Munroe pads(they were also on sale). I had warned them that I had a concern about the calipers but the mechanic said they were working well and both sides wore evenly so he doubted there was a hanging up problem. He also checked out the rear drums and they were working well also. He wasn't sure why I went through them so fast other than maybe the last place put the "B" grade pads on. Like you, I'll be keeping an eye on this set.

It got to the point where you could get pads that actually stopped well, didn't squeal, didn't chop up the rotors, lasted a long time and didn't dust up the wheels much. Then they had to take the asbestos out.
